چکیده

We compared the high-end Intel Xeon processor X5570 (2.93 GHz) with the low-end Intel® Xeon® processor E5504 (2.0 GHz) for two Intel IT computing environments: design and enterprise. In real-world application testing with Intel’s electronic design automation (EDA) workloads, two-socket servers based on the 2.93GHz processor delivered the same performance for an estimated 42 percent lower TCO over four years, as shown in Figure 1. For enterprise computing, analysis confirmed a similar relationship: A two-socket server based on the 2.93-GHz processor delivered 87 percent better performance for an estimated 8 percent increase in TCO.

2013 Maurice Wilkes Award Given to Parthasarathy (Partha) Ranganathan

......Parthasarathy (Partha) Ranganathan received the 2013 Maurice Wilkes Award “for contributions to the design of power-efficient microblade servers and pioneering work in disaggregated system designs.” Partha has been a leading advocate for new system designs to improve energy efficiency and total cost of ownership (TCO) in large-scale datacenters. The technology inflection point of the last...

Towards Deploying Decommissioned Mobile Devices as Cheap Energy-Efficient Compute Nodes

The performance of mobile phone processors has been steadily increasing, causing the performance gap between server and mobile processors to narrow with mobile processors sporting superior performance per unit energy. Fueled by the slowing of Moore’s Law, the overall performance of single-chip mobile and server processors have likewise plateaued. These trends and the glut of used and partially ...

An Assessment of the Effects of Root and Tuber Expansion Project (RTEP) on the Livelihood of Cassava Processors in Kwara State, Nigeria

The study was carried out to assess the effects of the Root and Tuber Expansion Programe (RTEP) on the livelihood of project beneficiaries in Kwara State, Nigeria. A 3-stage sampling technique was adopted for the study, selecting a total of 80 cassava processors from two Agricultural Development Programe (ADP) zones in the State. Structured interview schedule was used as instrument to elicit pr...

All that Glitters is not Gold in Server Solutions: a Cost/Benefit Analysis of Cluster Servers

This paper presents TPC-H benchmark data and a mathematical model useful for the cost/benefit analysis in the process of selecting server solutions to computing challenges such as “big data” in the market. The analytical model is based on the Gartner’s Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) approach and TPC-H benchmark to test the cost/benefit of cluster server hardware and software configurations. The ...

The Advantages of 4-Socket Servers

The standard thinking on 2-socket servers has been that, as long as they can handle the workload, 2-socket servers scaled out have provided historic price/performance, energy efficiency, and density advantages. In many cases, these designs, particularly with the latest Intel Xeon processors do perform well for smaller workloads. Before making any purchase though, organizations operating in toda...
